Highlights from Ai2 at Google Cloud Next
April 18, 2025
Ai2 was at Google Cloud Next 2025 last week, where we shared our vision for a more open and transparent AI ecosystem, introduced a powerful new tool that helps us see inside the inner workings of an LLM, and highlighted how open-source AI can drive real impact in fields like healthcare, education, and the public sector.
In case you missed it, here’s a quick recap of the key moments.
Teaming up with Google Cloud
We kicked off the week by announcing a brand-new partnership with Google Cloud. This collaboration brings our full suite of open models, including OLMo, Tülu, and Molmo, to Google Cloud’s Vertex AI Model Garden, making it easier than ever for developers, researchers, and organizations to build with our truly open AI. By combining our open-source approach with Google Cloud’s powerful infrastructure, we’re creating new opportunities for faster, more responsible AI innovation—especially in fields where trust, transparency, and data privacy matter most. Introducing OLMoTrace: a tool for increasing transparency and trust in language models
We introduced OLMoTrace, a groundbreaking tool that lets anyone trace a language model’s output back to its original training data. Built into the Ai2 Playground, OLMoTrace allows users to explore how our open models—like OLMo 2—generate responses by highlighting connections to specific documents in the training corpus. This level of transparency is a first in the LLM space and is a big step toward building more trustworthy, traceable AI systems. It's another way we're making our truly open AI more accessible to everybody.
You can try it for yourself, read more on our blog, or watch the demo to see this first-of-its-kind tool in action.
Fireside Chat: A new era of AI-powered research and innovation
We capped off the week with CEO Ali Farhadi joining Google Public Sector's Karen Dahut for a CEO Perspectives fireside chat, where they explored how open-source AI can transform research and innovation across sectors. It was a great opportunity to discuss our shared vision for making AI more transparent, accessible, and impactful—especially in areas like healthcare, education, and the public sector.
Watch some highlights from their chat:
Ali highlighted how tools like OLMoTrace, now available through Vertex AI Model Garden, are helping build confidence in AI systems. "Open-source AI isn't just about accessibility," he said, "it's about building trust and fostering collaboration across the entire ecosystem." Karen Dahut echoed that excitement, saying, “[with OLMoTrace] we can now trace the data all the way back to its source. It’s amazing and I think it’s such an innovation in AI and in these models and I can only imagine where we’re going to take this.”
Ai2 and Google Cloud commit $20M to advance AI-powered research for the Cancer AI Alliance
As part of our deepening collaboration with Google Cloud, we also introduced a $20 million joint investment in the Cancer AI Alliance (CAIA), a consortium of research centers and technology companies focused on accelerating cancer research through open, privacy-preserving AI.
