Ai2 named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies for 2025
March 18, 2025
We’re honored that Ai2 has been included in Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list for 2025. Recognized for our commitment to making AI models truly open, this inclusion reflects the impact of our work and the progress made by the broader open-source AI community in advancing transparency, accessibility, and responsible AI development. By offering fully open models, datasets, and tools, we're helping shape a future where AI is both responsible and impactful for all.
At Ai2, our goal is to support open research and collaboration by making AI models, datasets, and tools fully accessible. We believe that innovation happens faster when knowledge is shared, and we’re grateful to contribute to an ecosystem where researchers and developers can build on each other’s work.
Smarter, more efficient AI
This recognition comes at a time when Ai2 is making real strides in AI research and real-world applications. Some of the key breakthroughs we’ve been working on include:
-
OLMo 2 32B: Following up on the original fully open language model OLMo 7B, we released OLMo 2 32B, the first fully open model to outperform GPT-3.5 Turbo and GPT-4o Mini, also surpassing Mistral 24B and approaching larger models like Qwen 2.5 72B. With a fully open training recipe – data, methodology, and software – OLMo 2 32B enables unrestricted research and development. Models in the OLMo family have been downloaded over 3.2 million times.
-
Molmo: Our groundbreaking multimodal model, Molmo, is transforming the AI industry by delivering top-tier performance without the need for massive data volumes. With the ability to point-to and interact with images, Molmo performs comparably to larger proprietary systems, making it a milestone in open-source AI. Molmo assets have been downloaded over 1.6M times.
-
Ai2 Safety Toolkit: Ai2 introduced the Safety Toolkit, featuring WildTeaming and WildGuard, to address vulnerabilities and enhance LLM safety. These open-source tools help ensure the responsible development of AI, empowering developers to improve AI safety and protect against emerging threats.
-
OLMoE: Ai2’s innovation in mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture led to the creation of OLMoE, a highly efficient model capable of running on-device on users’ iphones. By leveraging smart design and top-tier data, OLMoE has proven that efficiency and performance are not mutually exclusive.
-
Tülu 3 405B: We launched Tülu 3 405B, a powerful set of fully open post-training recipes that can scale up to 405B parameters and achieve competitive or superior performance to both Deepseek v3 and GPT-4o.
-
Skylight and EarthRanger: Ai2 is applying AI to environmental challenges through EarthRanger and Skylight. EarthRanger, used at 550 sites in 70 countries, integrates AI-powered monitoring tools to help conservationists protect endangered species. Skylight combats illegal fishing by analyzing 10 million+ square kilometers of ocean data daily, detecting vessels evading monitoring and aiding enforcement efforts.
What’s next?
We remain committed to setting the standard for transparency across the entire AI industry. By making models and datasets fully open, we’re demonstrating that cutting-edge AI research doesn’t need to be hidden behind closed doors. Instead, it should be a collaborative effort where researchers, developers, and organizations worldwide can contribute, refine, and build upon one another’s work. When AI is open, everyone can understand, adapt, and improve it—and that’s how we unlock real impact.
The open-source community will drive the next wave of AI breakthroughs, and we’re proud to lead the way.
