Top story - Introducing OlmoEarth—State-of-the-art foundation models & open infrastructure to tackle the planet's biggest problems

This week, we released OlmoEarth—planet-scale foundation models for people, communities, and our planet. In addition to the state-of-the-art models, we also released OlmoEarth Studio for Earth data, annotation, and fine-tuning, part of our new OlmoEarth Platform.

Every day, satellites produce vast amounts of multimodal Earth data. Hidden in that imagery are answers to critical questions: What are the causes of deforestation? What crops may be at risk? How can we improve wildfire resilience?

Outside of a handful of very well-resourced organizations, answers to these questions are largely out of reach. You need complex data pipelines, powerful models, and bespoke infrastructure.

OlmoEarth is an open, scalable, end-to-end platform leveraging our new state-of-the-art Earth observation foundation models. The platform supports end-to-end workflows for building and serving Earth AI, from raw data collection to annotations and label management, through fine-tuning and deployment. OlmoEarth foundation models are highly efficient and easy to train, enabling seamless customization to support a wide variety of use cases. OlmoEarth’s integrated workflows cut costs and development time to better serve urgent, real-world needs.

Our partners are already making an impact with OlmoEarth:

🌱 International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI): Up-to-date crop-type maps in Nandi County, Kenya, in support of seasonal planning and to aid local officials in making informed decisions.

🌊 Global Mangrove Watch: Faster and more accurate mangrove maps to monitor, protect, and restore coastal ecosystems.

🔎 Amazon Conservation Association: Classifying likely drivers of deforestation across Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Brazil, providing actionable insights to guide conservation efforts.

🌲 NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL): Mapping live fuel moisture at scale to access wildfire risk and guide preparedness.

We're grateful to our many partners for collaborating with us to build a new open platform for Earth intelligence. Learn more here and request an account here.

olmOCR 2

Our latest model for document understanding, olmOCR 2, achieves state-of-the-art performance for real-world OCR of English-language digitized print files. Using our open tooling, you can specialize the model to your specific requirements.

SamudrACE

SamudrACE is a fast and accurate climate emulator that couples 3D models of the ocean and atmosphere, giving it a deep understanding of global Earth system interactions. It can simulate 1,500 years of global climate in a single day running on an NVIDIA H100 GPU.

Live Discord AMA

We hosted a live Discord AMA with researchers who’ve run real studies using our Olmo language model family—from machine unlearning to knowledge cutoffs to how models acquire new skills.

Seattle AI Week

As part of Seattle AI Week, we hosted AI Innovation in the Open, an afternoon of hands-on tutorials at Ai2 HQ. We kicked off with a presentation of our latest research, followed by demos of our Asta data-driven discovery agent and Olmo tooling.

Ai2 joins NVIDIA & Cirrascale to talk fully open AI innovation

On Tuesday, November 18, join us for a fireside chat hosted by NVIDIA, where Ai2’s Doug Downey (Senior Director of Semantic Scholar Research) will join NVIDIA's Jack Wells (Director of Higher Education and Research Computing) and Cirrascale's Dave Driggers (Chief Technology Officer) to discuss the Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure to Accelerate Science (OMAI).

OMAI is a collaboration between Ai2, NVIDIA, and Cirrascale to create a transparent, reproducible, and accessible AI ecosystem while making large-scale models like Olmo, Molmo, and Tülu easier to deploy in research and higher education.
